Last year, I managed to read a number of non-fiction books on a vast range of topics — leadership, fitness, productivity, wellbeing, mindfulness, to name a few. I’ve become more aware of my enjoyment of reading and the benefits it has on my outlook and wellbeing. Reading has been transformative and allowed me to connect with individuals and discuss subjects which I previously would never of entertained. It’s been liberating.
I sometimes find that even after reading a good book I’ve forgotten most of what was written in a matter of weeks and months. My thought process has already moved on to a new subject and the previous book has become a statistic and is now gathering dust on my bookshelf. I really try to retain the information but my mind wanders and I find another subject of interest. To counter this, I’ve started using Notes on my iPhone to record ideas and quotes from every book I read going forward. This has been a great help in retaining what I’ve read and also giving me a record to refer back.
